Pre-Season Article: Skagit Valley College Women's Soccer

Head Coach Tony Savoy enters his 10th year leading the Cardinals—adding to his history with the program as both a former player and an assistant men's coach. His passion for Cardinal Soccer spans well over a decade, and his women's team is coming off five consecutive postseason appearances, consistently competing at the top of the NWAC North Division.

Q&A with Head Coach Tony Savoy
Head Coach: Tony Savoy
Years at SVC: 10th Season

Q: What are the biggest strengths of this year's team, and how do you expect them to shape the season?

Coach Savoy: The strength of this team is unity. We have 9 returning players and 13 freshmen, and right away they've shown that they believe in each other and put the team first. Those traits will help us push through adversity when it comes, and the team will share in our success as the season progresses.

Q: Which returners or new faces should fans keep an eye on as potential impact players?

Coach Savoy: Too many to list. As I mentioned, we have a group that plays for the team, and we'll see different players step up and contribute this year. In our preseason, we had multiple goal scorers and several players with assists. Defensively, we've only allowed 3 goals against NWAC opponents so far, using multiple lineup combinations and getting both goalkeepers minutes in every game.

Q: What are the team's main goals for the season, both on and off the field?

Coach Savoy: We begin with making sure our players understand they are student-athletes—not athlete-students—so success in the classroom always comes first. On the field, our goal is to be competitive in every game and to put ourselves in position to play in the NWAC Championship Tournament for the sixth consecutive year.

The Cardinals Travel to Peninsula College on Wednesday, September 10th, for a 4 pm Match
